For people who only go off headlines and comments and don’t read the article, here’s the important bits:
- This only affects some users, not everyone
- The issue is that comment sections are disabled and video descriptions claim to be empty
- The issue goes away with a refresh, you don’t need to turn off the adblocker, though you’ll have to refresh every video
- It affects all videos
- The link to adblockers is due to everyone who is reporting the issue being a user of an adblocker, and turning it off fixing the issue permanently until it’s turned on again
- There’s no specific browser or adblocker mentioned in the article
- It affects Premium users too
edit: added “the article” after “don’t read” to clarify
This is why I will never get premium. You pay the motherfuckers money and still have to take it up the ass.
I’ll never get it because first-party ads are only a small part of the problem. Shitty rec algos, Shorts absolutely rammed the fuck down your throat, third-party ads, dislike counters, gaslighting you about the resolution, clickbait blockers, cross platform feed, etc. These are all solved with third party clients.
Yeah but if you were a YouTube Premium subscriber surely you’d disable the adblocker on youtube.com so you never get this issue.
Why? So they can serve you ads on top of something you’re already paying money for?
“there’s currently no way around it”
“The issue goes away with a refresh”
lol. sounds more like a bug if it’s also affecting Premium users though
The issue is that comment sections are disabled and video descriptions claim to be empty
So it makes the page even better?
Imagine being a paying Premium member and still get caught by this… That said, the YouTube comments are worth shit, so not much is lost there. The descriptions can be quite annoying when missing.
I really should start looking into yt-dlp or something. Anybody know if that’s still working fine these days?
One thing is certain: Your distro’s repository’s version of yt-dlp - even on bleeding edge distros - is likely out of date, and you’ll have to find and run the appimage version from the devs.
You can just pass the
--updateflag when invoking yt-dlp. I don’t think the package itself needs to be up to date in order to work reliably. That only works if yt-dlp was installed as a standalone binary or via pip. If it was installed from a distro repository, the self-update mechanism is intentionally disabled because the package manager controls the version. In that case --update does nothing : /
Updating Firefox suddenly fixed this for me. I then later just had my entire google account banned and I had to create a new account. They even attempted to IP ban me as well. Said I was banned until 2036 or something like that.
So you lost access to gmail as well?
Yeah and I had to change my gog and itch.io email addresses.
Damn, and that’s just the ones where swapping the email is possible without access to the original. More and more services seem to send a verification code at login. I guess you’re just shit out of luck then.
I better stop watching youtube then.
You didn’t get any options to unlock your account early, like pay a penalty or something?
Your account got banned from YouTube, or you got banned from Google and it’s apps?
Please reply to this dorumon
If it’s a ban from the whole google echo-system that is fucked up. I sadly still have a lot of important stuff linked to my google account.
Yeah it was a ban from the Google eco system.
Damn, that’s rough
+, I’ve been untangling from Google for years, still find the odd thing going to Gmail that could screw me over
I’ve started recently too. Slow and steady. But if this is true, I need to hurry tf up. It’s sad we (in Sweden) practically HAVE to have a google account since we use an app called BankID for everything with banking and identifying ourself with the government. So no google account ≈ no id
You can get the BankID for your bc but only for windows and I don’t have a windows pc anymore.
what is the reason for the ban?
“Based on these reports, users see a message stating “Comments are turned off,” which appears across a wide range of videos”
Seems like a win to me.
“Comments are turned off”

Damn, they’re really upping their game.
So my adblocker now also removes youtube comments? That’s more of a feature than a hurdle!
uBlock Origin on Firefox with default settings and filterlists still works successfully on Youtube.
Raymond Hill is the absolut GOAT
“No way around it” always ends the same After 2 days uBlock just works.
Taking no donations, just maintaining out of pure spite
Love to see it
Spite is a form of currency. lol
spite and hatred are incredibly powerful motivators.
I’m still waiting for them to just to implement Wildvine. It has to happen at some point.
Yes, I wonder why they hadn’t done it yet, except for paid movies.
Yeah, they probably already have the tooling in place. Maybe the power (heat + work) cost to encode a Mr. Beast video hurts the profit too much.
Maybe they’re afraid of putting widevine at the working end of the likes of ublock origin and brave. iIIRC some of the WV keys are in the wild, they just keep em close to the action not to make them rotate them out.
Works on my machine fails to account for A/B testing. Everytime someone says something’s not working, they also mean it’s not working on my machine/account.
uBlock origin is the same code on mine or yours machine. It does not need a graphics card, nor uses some particular instuctions of the CPU.
On Firefox Stable on Flathub at the time of writing, with default settings and default lists, it will work as expected on Youtube.Google does not always provide the same Youtube code/challenges to you and me. That’s what A/B testing is about.
Is uBlock Origin working for you specifically, enabling it alone with no other add-on?
Ok Google, free us from our sins. Clense our souls, show us the way to green grass
I mirror my yt channel that feeds my family to peertube for my viewers. No one watches it, but I’ll keep trying.
Please share a link to your peertube channel :)
Thank you! I’ll check them out \o/
I’ll stop using YT before i start watching ads.
No issues ublock and FF.
Yeah uBlock Origin has worked fine through every single one of these “adblockers are broken!” articles I’ve seen
I don’t mind, it’s still good to raise awareness about Youtube’s bullshit - especially since I’m getting ads for Border Patrol, OpenAI, and the fucking Melania movie now when I do see them (when I am lazy and using my Roku TV instead of HDMI). But it hasn’t been a problem for me yet.
You ever get the “You are disconnected from the internet” screen? It goes away with a refresh so it’s not a big deal, but it would be even cooler if it didn’t happen.
Only when there’s actual issues with YT servers.
YouTube is coming up with another infuriating way to force users to pay for Premium subscription or watch ads.
Or to let us know its time to quit. I have narrowed down my youtube use a lot. If it is ad only I won’t bother at all.
Won’t miss much frankly.
Wut? I just avoid u toob most of the time - problem solved. Rarely do I have a web search that would be solved by watching a video.
They will still inject ads to your home feed even if you get premium. I noticed the “Introducing” titled video recommendations which are usually 1-2 mins and they essentially place an item in your home feed. When I asked support they confirmed they were targeted ads but you don’t have to click them LMAO. Filthy lying company.
If YouTube ever gets rid of the reverse chronological subscriptions feed, I’m so out. I quit Twitter when they got rid of the reverse chronological feed forever ago, as it just felt useless and confusing at that point. As it is, YT is barely usable with premium, and is only enjoyable with revanced, Grayjay, and browser plugins. Sigh.
What is the reverse thing?
Reverse chronological just means in order of publish date, but most recent first.
download yt videos and lets reupload everything onto peertube idk
Theres a reason that youtube has no real competitor.
because the amount of data that gets uploaded to youtube every day, every hour, is unfathomable.
I dont even know if its possible to create a proper competitor to youtube at this point. Just from a data center/harddrive point of view alone, the amount of money would be so staggering as to be impossible for anyone but another giant evil company to have a hope at being able to afford it.
There is no real way to compete with youtube directly.
Only options are things that are not direct youtube competitors, Which are typically much smaller, possibly maintaining a narrow subject focus, and require monthly fees/subscriptions to access
I dont even know if its possible to create a proper competitor to youtube at this point.
There is. People just wouldn’t like it. Lowering the resolution and framerates massively to save on space. The nerds (derogatory) would trash the platform everywhere they can have a voice if it doesn’t support 4k 120fps, though.
Even if you limit it to 720p, if it were to be even a quarter as popular as youtube, the bandwith and storage requirements would still be astronomical.
not to even mention the computational power required to process and transcode all that data from whatever format you upload it to, into whatever format the platform wants.

i agree with you
the amount of money would be so staggering as to be impossible for anyone but another giant evil company to have a hope at being able to afford it… FACK
Meh. My ad blocking strategy on my phone and desktop still works fine. I use Morphe (formerly Revanced), uBlock Origin on Firefox and AdGuard on my android phone.
No ads. No problem.
What is morphe? What happened to revanced?
Here’s the news.
Is Noutube still working?
I just discovered it because of your question, downloaded and it works. :)
