  • Yea, you are probably right. Just wanted to ask before I hand it down myself, in case I missed some really cool use case for it.

My Jellyfin is also very basic with everything pre transcoded as I don’t even have/need >1080p.

So it just looks like a window on my main PC and this way I have ram on my new PC

This sounds really cool. Does that actually work, did you do a comparison? I would have expected that most RAM usage comes from rendering the frame and not sending it, or does waypipe somehow outsource that as well?

  • Yea, he has a very unique style. Very “broadcast-yourself” era kind of YouTube. I really like his writing, its clear to me the he is putting a lot of effort into each video. Especially in this video with the intro about the origins of “Guy” making this a really nice package. Probably not every ones cup of tea (as seen by the other commenter) but I’m always happy to see a new upload of his.

  • I have an account in the threadiverse (lemmy, piefed…) and one in microblogverse (mastodon, gotosocial…). just because they behave so differently it is not a great ux to be using only one.

in some instances it does make sense though. if your are not a heavy lemmy user and primarily use mastodon you could just @ the corresponding community in your posts. they will then show up normally here and you can still interact with it. (following communities on mastodon looks bad on mastodons end though)

or if you just want to comment or like a video on peertube you could just do that from any instance. peertube accounts also show up on lemmy like normal communities which is neat.

so in short if your are not planning on using something heavily it is probably enough to just use an account you already have. but like with everything you should just try things out and see what works best for you. :)

  • Oh yea you are right. XP was a joy to use. They have been slacking since they got that monopoly though. I am forced to use Outlook because of the company. And am always amazed how many redirects you can do for a simple authentication. Every service looks completely different and the audio in teams is so broken it cuts off for a couple of seconds and switches from mono to stereo for no apparent reason. Everything just feels like its extra work.

Switching to Linux on my private devices actually reminded me of the old windows. I just wish the UI UX of some software would be on par as well. LibreOffice and GIMP is just not fun to use.

Normally I look stores up using OSM and I believe I found my ISP through an comparison portal. Sure there could be advertisement involved and I definitely bought many things because of it. I just don’t think we would need that in any way and that the quality of life would even go up if we banned all advertisement.

Its definitely not feasible, at least not in our life times. In my city there was a citizen initiative to ban a lot of public advertisements which did not went through as there were not enough people signing up. So apparently we are not ready for that yet. Burning all the advertising execs does sound like a sensible thing to do though :) Lets settle on that.

How would you know what to search for?

Because of the needs I have, when I am hungry ill search for recipes or restaurants. When my apartment needs cleaning ill search for cleaning supplies, when I am bored ill look up what movies are playing.

I actually can not come up with a single situation where advertisement would be needed or helpful in anyway. I also do not have a problem with smaller advertisement, but in my dreams they are all banned regardless. Won’t be missing those.

  • I really do not like brightness of the screen. Last year I found out how cool paperbacks are (the smaller ones) as I can put them in my pockets. Been reading more in 2025 than i did in the last decade i feel like.

I like the feeling of actually holding knowledge in your bare hands (given you can read and understand the language). Its so cool!
