  • Right on, CMA!

“The notwithstanding clause should not be a tool to end public and legal debate,” CMA president Dr. Margot Burnell said in a statement.

The CMA says being able to obtain Charter rulings, even when laws remain in force under the notwithstanding clause, remains critical for transparency, accountability and evidence-based health policy.

The CMA warns the outcome could have ripple effects beyond Saskatchewan, including its own legal challenge of Alberta’s Bill 26, which it argues interferes with evidence-based medical care and physicians’ freedom of conscience.

Alberta has also invoked the notwithstanding clause to shield that legislation.

  • Make Nazis afraid again ✊

An investigation by the fifth estate has found the website known as Entropy, which launched in Calgary, is in fact a safe haven for white supremacists and other extremists seeking to monetize the hateful content they livestream to online audiences.

Within two years after it launched in 2019, Entropy processed more than $3 million in transactions and experts say it has since grown to become an essential service for dozens of neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

Many creators have found a home on the Canadian platform after being kicked off and blocked from making money on mainstream platforms such as YouTube for posting antisemitic and racist content that violates the streaming giant’s terms of service.

  • There’s nothing more Reddit like than “I think what you mean / you should be saying” and a “this is such a Reddit moment” to boot lol

We can agree to disagree. I was respectful. I didn’t say the person or their viewpoint was wrong - I just pointed out what I think is inaccurate in their comment. And, most importantly, I fully explained myself so that others could examine my argument and disagree with it. In retrospect, I should have used “cloaked” instead of “disguised” for connotative language’s sake. I’m trying to help Lemmy remain a place for respectful and accurate discourse, not bots, disinformation, and dunking on people (edit: censorship too)

  • Studies have shown that racism is often caused by a lack of intelligence

Social scientists don’t speak in such certain terms. I think what you may mean is, anecdotally, the people you’ve seen be racist seem unintelligent. Me too. But the answer to get rid of racism isn’t to get rid of unintelligent people. It’s more complicated than that. Hearing anecdotal experience disguised as scientific evidence (“studies have shown X is caused by Y”) feels like reddit not Lemmy

  • Neither Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News, nor Mulroney himself responded to multiple requests for comment about whether The West Block host sharing video game footage in the middle of a war is in alignment with Global News’ journalistic standards.

The debunked video continues to remain visible on Mulroney’s X page more than 24 hours after PressProgress first contacted the media outlet and its host.

Corus and Mulroney did not address other social media postings by Mulroney over the weekend.

There are a lot of other posts…

Another post shared by Mulroney celebrated the military strikes and warned readers: “Don’t let the left fool you with their anti-war propaganda.” The post continued with “Long live America. Long live Israel. Long live Iran.”

Global News has previously fired its own journalists for sharing opinions about Palestine on their personal social media accounts. In 2023, Global fired Palestinian-Canadian journalist Zahraa Al-Akhrass, suggesting her social media posts violated the company’s policies and created a “perception of serious, journalistic bias.”

Internal emails reviewed by CBC News showed Global News managers had ordered the journalist to remove postings that included hashtags like #freepalestine, #gazaunderattack and #gazagenocide.

Corus provided no response to questions about why sharing content on social media with hashtags like “#freepalestine” could give rise to perceptions of bias but not posts that declare “long live America” and “long live Israel,” let alone posts suggesting left-wing “anti-war propaganda” is a lie.

  • Iranian-Canadians will also tend to have far more historical context than the amnesic and imperialist Western mainstream media. Who overthrew the democratically elected government in Iran (under which women’s rights were quite good) and brought in the current regime in 1953? UK and US. Who tore up the nuclear non-proliferation agreement thereby necessitating these bombings (in their own twisted rhetoric)? One Orange Asshole in 2017. How did Irag and Afghanistan fare after US involvement? How might a non-Zionist view what’s happening in Gaza?

The levels of analysis aren’t even in the same league. This CTVNews is just consent-manufacturing, not news or journalism
