I’ve recently gotten really into HelixNotes, which I sync to my phone via Syncthing. And the developer is on Lemmy. They’ve been pushing a lot of updates so I’m excited to see where it goes.

I got Terminus for the TRMNL set up using Podman on my server running NixOS.

Although I’m actually planning on replacing Terminus with my own simple server app that way it can be even more declarative (no Postgres database of devices/users/screens) and easier for me to customize. The API I’ll have to implement is extremely straightforward, so I don’t anticipate it taking too long.

I’m curious what alternative to Pi-hole you set up. (I’m planning on installing Pi-hole soon but wanna hear all my options)

I’ve heard you’re more likely to get blocked for using a VPN since some sites will block requests originating from data centers, which is less likely to happen coming from a residential IP address. (Although if you’re already using a VPS, the right proxy may help)

This might be useless advice, but it might just be best to increase (and randomize) the amount of time between requests.

And to answer your question, Mullvad is what I use, and it’s what I see reccomended (from both Reddit, and The Wirecutter) the most often because they store so little of your data, and you can even pay in cash.

When I first decided to switch to Linux, I started exclusively using apps that were available on Linux. This way I was able to gradually transition my workflows one app at a time without any rush. When I was ready to install Linux, I did it on a new computer so I still had access to everything on the old computer and there was no risk of going computer-less if the installation went sideways.

Also, keep in mind that Asahi only works on M1 and M2 Macs. (If you have an old Intel Mac, you can just run normal Linux without Asahi)

postmarketOS, Mobian, Ubuntu Touch, and Mobile NixOS all seem to have recent activity.

As for hardware, although the PinePhone Pro got lukewarm reviews, maybe they’ll iterate and get better or at least prove to other companies that there’s a demand for Linux phones.

I’m hopeful there’ll be at least one usable option within 5 years or so. And if not, I’ll be sticking with GrapheneOS.

For my next phone, I’m planning on getting a used Pixel or possibly something from whatever OEM they’ve partnered with

What model do you have? Does it support any open source firmware such as DD-WRT, OpenWrt, or FreshTomato?

GrapheneOS doesn’t support Motorola phones

Here’s what I’ve done:

• Delete your advertising ID in the system settings
• Disable the other ad-related settings
• Disable tracking in the keyboard app (long-press , to get to settings, then click “Privacy”) or switch to HeliBoard
• Avoid the Google Play store when possible
• Use F-Droid and Obtainium instead
• Install the DuckDuckGo browser and enable DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection (I only use the DDG app for app tracking protection and email protection; I don’t browse the web with it)
• Install Firefox with uBlock Origin
• Set DuckDuckGo as your search engine in Firefox
• Make sure your next phone supports GrapheneOS and install that instead of normal Android
• Wait for real Linux phones to become viable and use that in a couple years

Stuff I haven’t done yet but probably will eventually:

• Replace the default home screen app (your home screen is an app, btw)
• Replace the Google keyboard app

I haven’t looked for good alternatives for these yet so if anyone has suggestions, I’m listening!
