Too difficult. Better to ask someone who’s good at painting to do it for you. Then you can give them something, as a sign of respect, to compensate them for their time.

2·3 days agoMy wife used to work on that kind of research. Interesting stuff. She left that job to research cancer instead.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel your job is important and are you proud to do it?English
4·7 days agoMy job isn’t important, but I make good money and my work-life balance is excellent. I get to spend time with my wife, my kids, and my cats. So I’m good with it.
I’ve never been able to picture myself at an important job. I don’t know what that would be.

2·8 days agoGod dammit. That has to be on purpose. It’s so fucking stupid.
If we’re only looking at the bad things a country has done, committing actual genocide is worse than destabilizing governments and overthrowing dictators.
But you’re also ignoring the good things. The US has historically provided around one third of all humanitarian aid in the world. And while it may not be the perfect example of democracy, it has used its power to keep much worse regimes in check.
Saying that America is “objectively THE main world villain” is just silly. Like, you think North Korea is morally superior? Seriously? Or Russia?

Bush also created PEPFAR and saved more than 20 million lives in Africa.
Trump dismantled PEPFAR, and that alone will cost something like 15 times more lives than Bush’s unjust wars.
Bush was not a good president, but saying he’s worse than Trump is just ridiculous.
Agreed. Bush soars over it.
First there’s the base level of competence. He wasn’t actively making everyone worse, every day.
I’m not disregarding all the terrible things he did, but he also did a non-zero number of good things.
Between him and Trump, it’s not close.
Better than Trump? Bush was absolutely and in every way a better president than Trump.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s your most controversial opinion?English
594·21 days agoPlastic straw pollution doesn’t have a measurable impact on the environment.
The entire thing about banning plastic straws comes from some high schooler using back-of-a-napkin math to guess how many straws are in the ocean in what was clearly a successful attempt at starting a science fair project the night before it was due. Some news station picked it up, and then a bunch of science-illiterates ran away with it.
You can’t determine the impact of pollution by count. Straws are tiny and weigh almost nothing. If you skip buying one pair of sneakers in your life, then you’ve successfully reduced your plastic use by almost a lifetime of plastic straws.
Removing plastic straws is probably the single least impactful way to reduce plastic pollution. It’s pure virtue signaling: it’s about presenting an image of being environmentally conscious while doing effectively nothing to help the environment.

2·24 days agoOn the other hand, appealing to the center hasn’t been working for Democrats lately. If Crockett energized the base, the numbers could be there.
Plus a lot of us aren’t comfortable perpetuating the racism/sexism by caving to it.
I’ll vote for either candidate, but this idea that it’s obvious Crockett could never win doesn’t sit right with me.
