    Explanation From The Artist:

    Although having sons to inherit the title was preferred in many premodern cultures, the Ottoman Padishah Selim the Grim (1470-1520) was known for being ruthless in eliminating claimants to his throne. Upon overthrowing his father (whom he likely assassinated), he ordered that his brothers and nephews be put to death.

    He had 8 sons but had most of them killed, leaving only the most competent one (Suleiman the Magnificent) alive. Close to his death, he became paranoid and also attempted to kill Suleiman, causing him to flee to another province until his father passed away.
