  • And this is why I’m glad I no longer watch TV.

(though in reality, the separation came in 1999 when we got broadband internet)

Time for everyone with folks over 45 that still tune in and watch broadcast news to drop them stories like this and ask them if this was how the Soviet Union used to behave. Even better if you’ve got grandparents in their 60’s.

Put that reminder into their heads. Seriously.

It’s time to set the mental foxes into the henhouses of complacency.

  • I generaly will upvote replies or posts were the commenter is making a sensible point in an argument, (even if it politically may NOT be something I agree with) as I do come to sites like lemmy with the “old school” usenet conversation philosophy.

If I can be a foil that another person can have ideas bounced off (esp. if they are really good ideas) I will jump in, upvote and comment.

I will upvote when someone is showing their artwork and I see a sincere effort and openness to share - that is always nice, even if the person is starting out and the work isn’t very polished. Be it cooking, photography, music, art, carpentry… whatever… people have to start somewhere and I will never tear into someoone’s effort in a destructive way.

I also upvote when someone like on the music comms brings a new artist whose style is something I have not heard before (and at my age, that is a rarity) and is well crafted and complex… Love that esp. so.

  • It may be that the conversation is deemed repetitive? From what I understand it’s not just about lots of conversation, it’s about varied conversation.

I honestly don’t know, am just spitballing ideas to work out why the site went off the rails like it did. I mean, I’m done… definitely won’t go back (no need to) but now it’s into that “post mortem” phase for me.

  • Going through your post, it occurs to me that you, like many others - myself included - are being banned after a set amount of content is generated. This ALL seems a bit as if we are used to create conversational content which they are training AI with and then they get to a point with what we have said and have posted and it’s “hup-ho… time to go…” and we get banned for utter baloney reasons with zero recourse.

The oddest thing for me, is I’ve still got my account, it’s still logged in on a few of my browsers, and a few weeks ago, I got a reply to a comment I made FIVE years ago. It was in my inbox. So I just hit the context link, found the comment and deleted it.

I would have taken my 15 years of comments if they hadn’t shut that ability down last year, so I’m a bit baffled by how someone found the post I made the comment on, in the first place. It’s all but impossible to get at posts that are older than a year… and the comments within… Forget it.

Was it some AI test to check on the account? Dunno. Am not letting it go and will sail through every few weeks to see if more new replies have come in.

It’s going to be my pet project, for certain.

  • Hola former Redditor!

You can subscribe to any community that shows in your feed.

It may take a few hours to get accepted, since it does depend on the instance that community is hosted on. They are actually run by folks that may be off doing things at time so if no one is around to approve you right away, don’t panic. They’ll get there. I made the mistake of signing in on a ton of different instances, but am on old.lemmy.zip. Because of course it’s got the old reddit layout, which allowed me to move in w/o missing a beat!

The only instance I haven’t bothered with is the lemmy.ml since it can be a bit fractious (the rumor is they’re “tankies” that is, pro Putin folks… thanks, no… that’s okay, I’ll pass…) and has a bit much drama - which I am SO over since I got permabanned on Reddit last October… two weeks shy of 15 years.

The main thing I like is there is no running karma tally outside of what’s directly on your comments or posts!

It’s WAY more laid back and so few bots to passive-aggressively wind one up.
